The CornBelters have partnered with The Miracle League of Central Illinois for a new event addition to the 2017 Legends Weekend, presented by McLean County Orthopedics, featuring a Home Run Derby on Friday, July 28.
The Friday night Home Run Derby will be a limited-entry process with forty (40) spots available at the cost of $100 per participant, which will include twenty (20) tickets to the event.
General admission tickets to the Home Run Derby are on sale at the cost of $5 each. Seating is on a first-come-first-serve basis throughout the ballpark. All net proceeds from the evening’s event will go to The Miracle League. Individuals who pre-purchase tickets for the Legends Game on Saturday, July 29 will be granted entry into Friday night’s Home Run Derby by showing their tickets at the gates.
Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. for the Home Run Derby on Friday, July 28 with the competition starting at 6:05 p.m.
The competition will utilize standard sized softballs, and SSUSA approved softball bats will be provided by Dudley Sports. The pitcher will be provided by the CornBelters with the same pitcher being utilized for all batters. The fence line for the Friday preliminary rounds will be the standard baseball fencing.
The first round will consist of all forty (40) participants getting an opportunity to hit as many home runs as they can within a 90-second time frame or before they commit five (5) outs. Outs will be counted for any missed swings, ground balls (hits that do not clear the home run fence), and any tipped or foul balls. Once the first round has been completed, the top five finishers (of the 40) will go on to a second round where the Home Run Derby Hitting Champion will be crowned.
Following the crowning of the local Hitting Champion, four Legends will then compete to determine the celebrity representative for the Home Run Derby Championship.
The two champions will then come back for a showdown on Saturday, July 29 from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., with the Legends softball game following (6:15 p.m. start), to crown the overall winner. The fence line for the championship round will be set at a distance closer to standard softball fencing, and the two competitors will be allowed five outs each with a flexible timing system.
Following Friday night’s Home Run Derby will be the Legends Reception at The Corn Crib beginning at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are still on sale for the Friday night social where fans will have the opportunity to meet many of the Legends and hear stories from their playing days in a relaxed atmosphere. Reception tickets are on sale for $55 if you have a reserved box seat ($20 each) for the game and $60 if you have a bleacher seat ($15 each).
